Nicaragua Day 4

Today was a busy day! We ran late everywhere we go, but we so wished we could stay longer in each location. We drove up the mountains even more and visited Stevens Point's Sister City, Esteli. It is my favorite place so far. Right now I am sitting outside after my first warm shower in days. Listening to the pigeons, chickens, birds, to laughter. The sun is shining, there's a slight breeze, it's warm but not hot. There is no place I'd rather be. Yet, being here makes me more joyful over what I have at home as well. I gave true thanks for the warm shower I have at home that doesn't run out of water. That is not an everyday luxury here.

We left the hotel and headed to the San Benito Learning Center. Estella, the teacher shared about her center. She takes a lot of children with learning disabilities and teaches them to read. A lot of them in the public school are a lost cause and discouraged. Unlike at home where we can do all sorts of supplementary things, without someone like Estella, these kids are lost causes. She is doing a great work. She also came to my workshop the day before to make jewelry from inner tubes. She was super excited because they were already utilizing the tires. Now they can utilize both parts.

These tortilla's are made with raw corn, not dried. They take the soft kernels and blend it up into a different type of tortilla.

Husking the corn for the restaurant, this must be an all day project!

The first place we went in Esteli was this Cafe. It was a very American Cafe. If you are ever here, check it out. They took us to the cigar factory.

From there we headed to Maria's theater center. Maria came to WI in September. I had a great time translating for her on her visit. Love seeing her on this side.

Maria lead us in some fun get to know you games. There is so much I could say about her. That will be for another post.

We also met the Vice Mayor of our sister city. Mayor to Mayor. My photo needs some editing so it will have to wait till I get home to post it.

And one of my favorite parts was stopping at this mural.

My friend Mirna's shirt matches the mural. I had to get myself in at least one photo.

The trucks in the Esteli fire department were donated by W/NP, they are flown down here. The city is so grateful. They gave Amy flowers because a little over a week ago was her birthday. They had to honor her. She's so loved!
